How to generate high resolution large format prints from SVG files?

My situation is the following

I have a SVG file for a relatively small print (~12" X 20"). I would like to enlarge it and print it to a ~36" X 60" area but still maintain 720 dpi resolution. When I use AI to print, I got something that does not look anything near 720 dpi quality. I think I must miss something since I could not find any knob to tune printing resolution during printing process. Really appreciate any thoughts and suggestions.

By the way, I tried to use PS to do the same print. The resulting print's resolution is much better but PS limits rasterization size to 44". I also post this limitation questions in Photoshop forum,

Thank you all for your thoughts and wisdom. I think I found where I went wrong. I need to rasterise after I resize my SVG file by going to "Effects" menu and select "Rasterise". That is where I can select high resolution to rasterise original file to larger print. After perform this operation, I can get decent prints with the same file. Again, thank you all so much. I learn a lot from your inputs.

Illustrator is a vector application.

That means that the objects you create are resolution independend.

If the svg file you have is vector only, than it will print at the resolution that your printer is capable of.

Edit: But you also need a RIP that supports PDF printing, like the Adobe PDF Printing Engine.

Not completely true Ton. As long as the content is vector, even a PostScript RIP can output at a high resolution. If there's transparency involved, then certainly the PDF print engine would yield better results, but a Postscript RIP will work.

I know that PostScript RIPs can do that, but since the Epson P-8000 was mentioned (which is a recent printer), I would recommend a recent technology.
