Question

How to kern objects in Illustrator

Hi Adobe Forums,

I'm typicallt a PSD guys but I've gotten started using objects and learning how powerful it is to be able to control elements in Illustrator.

Is there a way to "kern" objects, or rather create distance between a selected range of elements rather than deleting the object, going back to text and guestimating how wide my letters need to be before turning the word into an object form for effects?

If there's a way to do that, please let me know. I'd be thrilled.

Thanks!

You can kern type by holding Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) and hitting the Left or Right Arrow keys. That does not work for objects though.

When moving objects using the Arrow keys, you can adjust how much they move by going into Preferences > General and adjusting the Keyboard Incremement. Not sure if that helps you or not.

"guestimating how wide my letters need to be"

I'm assuming you don't have the font?

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out. I am afraid there is no direct tool or feature to kern objects. But you may try the workaround suggestion shared by @tromboniator. Also, here is a youtube tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-u-_FbgGYE) which I hope will help you out.

Let us know if you need any further assistance. We'd be happy to help you out.

Is this the sort of thing you mean?

This is my best guess from your description.
