How to open/edit a drawing from Adobe illustrator ipad on Adobe illustrator desktop?

I made a drawing on illustrator using an iPad and when I went to open it on a computer it wouldn't let me. I was able to see it but I couldn't open it. Also the title didn't have "ai" in it. My files are connected with the cloud which is why it showed up on the computer. I'm not sure if I need to save it special on the iPad to get it to work on the computer. For the record, I was able to open a file I originally made on the computer, on my iPad, and then on the computer again. But the drawing I'm having trouble with was originally made on the iPad. I would like to know I how I can open my drawing on the computer. Sorry this isn't very specific, I just started using illustrator.
