How to preserve the path after applying 'type on a path'

I have a shape I applied 'type on a path' to, and after adding the text to it, the path is not able to be separated from the text applied to it. If I try to use 'expand', the path is deleted. The only workaround I know of is to duplicate the path first before applying text to it so I have a clean copy.

nmycps,

Deselect (you can click an empty spot), then Click the path with the Direct Selection Tool  away from the Type, then copy to get a new identical path (at the same position), or adjust the current one and see the Type follow.

You can also copy the path and lock it, then adjust the original with the Type.
