How to remove several layers of clip groups from svg image

I have opened an svg image in the most recent version of Illustrator. I would like to sort all of the items into layers so I can edit them. However, there are several layers of clip groups for every single thing! Many of them are empty, but there are hundreds to sort through. Is there a quick way to remove them? I have alreayd tried 'Flatten Artwork' and that doesn't work.
