Question

How to Reset the Asset Export Counter in Adobe Illustrator (Latest Version)?

When exporting assets (e.g., illustrations, icons) using the Asset Export Tool, Illustrator automatically appends an incremental counter to the filenames (e.g., asset_1.png, asset_2.png, etc.). However, I need to reset this counter to start again from 1, but I cannot find any built-in option to do so.

What I’ve Tried:

Deleting and Re-adding Assets:

  • I removed all assets from the Asset Export panel and re-added them, but the counter continued from where it left off instead of resetting.

Checking the Gear Icon Settings:

  • I explored the settings in the gear icon within the Asset Export panel, but it only provides options for export formats (e.g., PNG, JPG) and does not include a counter reset option.

Renaming Assets Manually:

  • I tried renaming the assets manually, but the counter still increments automatically during export.

Questions:

Is there a hidden setting or method to reset the Asset Export counter in Illustrator?

If not, could this feature be added in a future update?

It would be incredibly helpful for workflows that require exporting assets in multiple batches.

Are there any scripts or workarounds that Adobe recommends to reset the counter?

I have the same issue. I delete the assets that had been previously added to the Asset Export panel (select them in the Asset Export panel, then click the trash can icon). But when I add new assets, the numbering still continues from the last assets. I see no way to reset the asset numbering, for either the assets showing in the panel, or the exported file names. (Windows 10, Illustrator 29.4)

Hello @Jennifer5EEE,

Could you share more details, like if Illustrator behaves this way with specific files, or when exporting to a specific folder location, and a small screen recording of your exact workflow, so I can try and replicate this on my end?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello @EspitiaL.

I tried replicating this on my end but could not. Would you mind sharing more details, like the version of the OS/Illustrator, the folder location where you're exporting your files, and a screen recording of your entire workflow and the problem, so I can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
