How-to scale strokes and effects in Illustrator

Hi everyone,

I’m pretty new to Illustrator, so sorry if this is a basic question 😅

I’ve noticed that sometimes when I scale or resize shapes (especially after copying or grouping them), they don’t behave the way I expect—like strokes getting thicker, or shapes slightly changing proportions.

I’m not sure if this is something I’m doing wrong, or if there’s a setting I should be using (like “Scale Strokes & Effects” or something like that).

Could someone explain what’s actually happening here in simple terms? I want to understand the correct way to resize objects without messing up the design.

Thanks a lot in advance 🙏

    Hedda,

“I’m not sure if this is something I’m doing wrong, or if there’s a setting I should be using (like “Scale Strokes & Effects” or something like that).”

In addition to what David said, in the case you describe you indeed need to use Scale Strokes & Effect. There is a great difference between stroked and unstroked paths

Without that scaling, Stroke Weights remain the same and thereby they get relatively thicker when you scale down and thinner when you scale up.

You can turn the setting on and off in different places such as the Transform palette.

Obviously, in other cases you need to turn the setting off for consistent Stroke Weight.

Strokes (probably) not getting thicker but staying the same size when resizing, but appearing much larger when sizing down. If you want your strokes to scale, turn on the preference you mentioned.
