Question

How to set EPS as default save file type (remove ai)

I am opening multiple EPS files, editing them and saving them but instead of just saving the file Adobe Illustrator keeps asking to save them as ai and I have to select eps from the drop menu to save it normally.

It happens when I do this manually or with batch action, I can't open eps edit and save as eps, it keeps putting ai file as the main option.

How to remove ai and have eps as default?

Why is it essential for you to save files as .eps in the first place? Eps is a file format that has not been updated since the 1990s. It does not support transparency and thus does not provide full compatibilty with other Creative Cloud programs such as InDesign. Ai or PDF are much more useful formats.

Because all stock image websites require that vector files are eps, and not only that it has to be Illustrator 10.

They do not accept svg or ai.
This is from ther contributor guidance:

We accept EPS files that are:

up to 100 MB
no less than 4 MP and no greater than 25 MP --  this rule applies to the size of the bounding box around your artwork, not your artboard
must be compatible with Adobe Illustrator 8 or 10.

Saving as EPS can go terribly wrong if you don't do it right. Only AI is the native file format and only with that you get fully editable files guaranteed. SO it is important that it is the default. Simple as that. You should be able to make an action or a script if you want something else.

Hello @Marinapomorac,

That does sound troubling. I tried replicating this behavior on my end but could not. Would you mind confirming the OS/Illustrator version and checking if your files are stored on an external/network drive or a cloud-synced folder like Dropbox? If yes, try moving the files to a location on the computer's internal drive, like the desktop, and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

When you open EPS file, edit and try to close it is saving it as eps_ It is not showing you in pop up window to save as ai?

That is what I get, latest adobe ai, all is the latest, file is on external drive and also on desktop, same thing.

I figured away around this by making ahk script that will erase .ai at the end of the file name an type eps and then press save, but why can't it just save pes if it is eps originally.

Hello @Marinapomorac,

Thanks for sharing the details. I tried replicating this behavior on my end but could not. Would you mind confirming the version of the OS/Illustrator and sharing a screen recording of your exact workflow and the problem, so I can check it with the team?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
