how to spot delete ?

I want to spot delete a few icons in a pattern.
How to do?

Try this. Drag the pattern swatch to the artboard. Using the Direct Select tool, box select the items you want to delete and delete them. When done, select all and with Opt/Alt held down drag every thing back to the original swatch and release.

Ok I m using the eraser tool but it leaves residue .?
