Hello, I have recetly encountered a problem where if I open a 2048x2048 px image in Illustrator it scales it down to 1536x1536 px. If I open a 6144x4096 px image it scales it down to 4608x3072 px.

I have encountered this issue on Illustrator version 28.1.0.141 after which I updated to version 29.0.0.186 but the issue still remains.

The default ppi in Illustrator is 72 ppi. Illustrator needs to assume a default size for a pixel since a pixel has no fixed size. Using another ppi for an image will display it larger or smaller. Your 96 ppi image will display smaller, but the numer of pixels will not change.

Okay, I had manually changed one of the image's PPI from 96 to 72 and now the image is in the resolution it is supposed to be

Exactly what are you doing? Just FIle > Open?

What is the resolution of the photo?

You probably want to try it with 72 ppi

What is the resolution: PPI of the images.

The number of pixels per inch tells Illustrator how to display the image by using that information to calculate how to display the image in inches/millimeters/feet/hands...
