How would you create this "echo" effect

Hello, I was wondering what were the steps taken to create this opaque 3D outline around the glasses. Is this even possible in illistrator or are some other programs required? Thanks!

You might probably be more happy in a 3D application.

 

But try the following approach: apply the classic 3D effect extrude & bevel to 2 shapes and then blend them.
