How would you go about recreating the PEZ candy pieces?? (3D, shadow, etc.)

I'm conceptualizing how to approach this challenge: recreating the PEZ candy pieces in illustrator. How would you go about it?

I've made a few attempts, but feel a bit too inexperienced to know how to go about this effectively.

I've used the pen tool to trace, then used the radial gradient and then tried created separate pieces to manually add the shadow, but I feel so far off. I've messed with the bevel/emboss, but that doesn't seem to be the right move either. The text is tricky too...

Here is the PEZ I'd like to recreate in Illustrator as discussed above:

Any insight would be so appreciated! Or if you've done a similar project, I'd really appreciate hearing about it!

This is as close as I got, but the PEZ lettering is another matter.

You might be able to do this with 3D effects, but it won't look too well.

You would also need several objects to construct one of those pieces.

When approaching this kind of job you usually will layer shapes on top of each other.

Work with gradient meshes, gradients, blends.

Just like you would do this in airbrush technique.

Would you mind showing your result so far?

Then we could tell you if you just need to input a lot of additional work or if your approach needs some adjustment.

End goal is to better understand how to be thinking when using Illustrator and creating shadow and 3D effects. If I can better understand how someone would approach this or has done this kind of work before and can share their story, it'd help me become a better user of the software...

Don't know if anyone has ever approached the PEZ pieces.

You will find a couple of tutorials on how to approach photorealistic drawings on sites like vectortuts.com
