The "Object selection by path only" option is unchecked. But I still can't select objects unless I clicked its path

Correct answer Monika Gause

Can you check out the object in the Layers panel - is iot perhaps a clipping path? Or clipping mask?

I am suddenly having this issue with 30.1, with placed objects. Some of the placed (.ai format) objects behave correctly (hovering over the object lights up the bounding box), and others require edge selection, and do not light up when hovered over. Here are screenshots illustrating the issue. 1. Hover over placed object lights up. 2. Hover over placed object does not light up. 3. Hover over edge lights up object.

Importantly, if the placed object is on top of a non-placed object on the page (same layer or different layers), clicking on the placed object selects the object beneath it.

Are those highway sign elements actually vector-based objects? Outline View will usually show outlines of any vector objects, even ones contained inside clipping masks.

Also, what happens if you embed the objects?

Yes. Very annoying.  Preferences/select and anchor display.  Deselect "Object selection by path only".

I had a similar issue, it must be a bug in Illustrator. I got fixed by selecting PIXEL PREVIEW or TRIM PREVIEW from the view menu. I'm using the latest version of Illustrator 28.5 on a Mac.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. Please share version of OS and Illustrator. Also, is it happening with a specific file or all the files?
I'd recommend resetting the preferences once. Follow instructions on the help article https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html#setting_illustrator_preferences

Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Ashutosh

You mean objects with a stroke only? That's normal Illustrator behaviour.

Hi

Is this Adobe Illustrator you're using, if so I move the thread to the correct forum
