I'm trying to convert live shapes to regular shapes.

I'm trying to create a shape like (A) by combine two live shapes (B). When I combine the shapes, however, I end up with a large rectange (C). How do I convert the live shapes (rounded rectangles) to a regular shape so uniting them doesn't treat it like a large rounded rectangle?

You have the rounded rectangle effect applied. Object > Expand appearance before you merge the shapes.

    To create a shape like this you could also draw a simple path with the pen tool and change the stroke settings accordingly to round the ends and corners.
