Also, please try creating a new Illustrator document and use File > Place to place the affected ‘.ai’ file instead of opening it directly. If possible, I'd also recommend testing the file on another Mac running the same Illustrator version. This will help determine whether the issue is specific to the file or related to the current system environment.

The fact that the same thing happens with a Time Machine backup from several days ago makes me think it’s worth checking whether this is an Illustrator/environment issue rather than just a problem with the file itself.

A few things I’d try first:

• Open the file on another Mac (or from a different macOS user account) to see if the behavior is the same.
• Reset Illustrator’s preferences and test the file again.
• Switch to View > Preview on CPU to rule out a GPU rendering issue.
• Check File > Recover Documents in case Illustrator has a recoverable version available.

One thing that caught my attention is that the document thumbnail is still visible on the Home screen before opening the file, but the document itself opens as a blank artboard. That could mean the preview data is still present, while Illustrator is failing to load the actual artwork.

A few additional details would help narrow it down:

• Which version of macOS are you using?
• Is this an Intel Mac or an Apple Silicon (M-series) Mac?
• What is the file size in Finder? Has it remained about the same, or is it unusually small?
• Do other Illustrator files open normally?
• Is the file stored locally or on a cloud service such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Creative Cloud Files?

Those details should make it easier to determine whether this is a document issue or something specific to the Illustrator installation or system.
