Question

Illustrator 2018/2019 keeps freezing my MacOS high sierra.

I am running Illustrator on my iMac with OS 10.13.5. After I have upgraded to Illustrator 22 it started to freeze and lock up my Mac.  I then have to do a restart by pushing the button in the back of the Mac to restart. It is not specific to any tasks and sometimes it freezes after 30 minutes, sometimes after 5 hours. I use Illlustrator everyday and seems to be crashing more frequently and more often. (or maybe I am using it more lately) I upgraded to OS 10.13.5 after reading that there was a known issue with compatibility with 10.13., hoping my problem would be solved but it still isn't. I have read all the suggestions on the forums and done them all including; trashing the preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled Illustrator,  deleted possibly corrupted fonts, change GPU settings (unclicked the box in general settings) I have no third party plugin or presets and I am not on a network. I am running Illustrator 22 on my MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.12.6 and it runs fine, no freezing at all. My iMac is only two years old and the problems started when I upgraded Illustrator. I chatted with support and the person on the chat could not resolve the issue with the troubleshooting suggestions. Any other suggestions or fixes I can try?

Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I am running into similar issues where using Illustrator will freeze my iMac till it restarts itself a minute later. This happens sometimes after hours of using the program, sometimes only minutes; it's very inconsistent. Also, it doesn't happen everyday.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about this. To understand this issue better, I would need a few more details like:

  • Is the issue related to a specific document(s)/asset(s)? If yes, could you please share the document(s)/asset(s) with us? You can upload it to the creative cloud and share the download link.
  • Where the files are saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.
  • Does turning off Dictation help resolving the issue?

  • If not, try turning off i-cloud sync from system preferences and check if that helps.
  • If nothing helps, check how does it work in safe mode: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/x-productkb/global/start-safe-boot-mode-mac.html?

We’re here to help, just need more info.

Srishti

Hi there,

As you already tried resetting preferences and reinstalling Illustrator. Please check how the application works in Root account( How to enable the root user on your Mac or change your root password - Apple Support ) and Safe mode (Start in Safe Boot mode for Adobe products on Mac OS X )

Looking forward to your response!

Regards,

Srishti

I'm not sure how enabling a root user would make a difference. I am the Admin and the only one that uses my Mac. I also don't think it's a good idea to keep that logged in or in safe mode for an extended period of time. The crashes happen without notice and I cannot replicate what causes them. It froze again today and it had been five days previous that it happened.

Hi there,

We are very sorry for this inconvenience. I would request you to please try resetting preferences for Illustrator and share results:

  • Close all Adobe applications.
  • ~/Library/Caches
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
  • ~/Library/Preferences
  • Delete or rename  Adobe Illustrator, com.adobe.illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 22 Settings folders.
  • Launch Illustrator from the creative cloud

Regards,

Srishti

In other threads people could solve performance issues with turning off dictation on the Mac.
