Illustrator 2020 data merge with linked file variables

Hi, does anyone know if there is an updated tutorial of data merge with linked file variables for Illustrator 2020? Also, do the linked files have to be on your computer, or can they be on a server (that requires a password to log on), or Dropbox? Any help is appreciated 🙂
