Illustrator 2022 won't place a jpeg or png saved from photoshop

I am using Illustrator 2022 and Photoshop. I am saving a graphic in Photoshop as an Export to jpeg or png. Then from Illustrator a create a new layer and try to "place" my graphic into the layer. Not only does this not work but there is no feedback at all when i try this. It literally does NOTHING when i try this. Please help I'm trying to get some assets completed and on my website asap!
