Illustrator 22.0.1 Creates Multiple Linked File Sources - How do you stop this?

So it seems with the new Illustrator update that when you drop, for example, a .psd file into Illustrator and then use that same .psd image multiple times within the file, it will create multiple sources in the links instead of using that one .psd to link back to each image. This has been incredibly annoying, when for example you could have 10 different .psd files in Illustrator, and if you have multiple uses of that in your .ai workspace it will create apples.psd, apples.psd2, apples.psd3, etc when packaging. This makes the file ENORMOUS. The only way to make the file smaller if you want to send it somewhere is to then go into the package and relink the files from there. Is there a way to stop this from happening before packaging? I have also run into issues packaging in itself because the file becomes to large and crashes illustrator while trying to package the tens of .psd files when in reality it should only be relinking to about 8 for example. What is the benefit of this change? To me this also makes editing inconvenient because if you wanted to change something in a photoshop file and make it a universal change, it would only effect that one singular file within your .ai file because it creates individual .psd links.

Any thoughts - ways to stop this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Can you be a bit more precise?

I just ended a romote session with Adobe, it's a local vs. server issue. When working off the server packaging creates multiple files and locally does not.

Thanks for trying though, much appreciated.

Is there a way to turn this off? We work off the server only and packaging to desktop and then transferring to server is very time consuming. Also, there is sometimes not enough space on local disk. We didnt have this issue on earlier versions.

Thank you.

I have 22.0.2 and cannot reproduce this.

Of course the placed link is listed several times in the links panel but that was the case in CC2017 as well.

When packaging the file I get the linked file just once.

Everyone in my creative department is having the same issue I am with the update. So far three separate artists, so I know this is not a problem I am having individually.

But yes, I am use to it using the file only once while packaging, if it is the same file, and instead of that happening, now it is creating a package with 22 of the same .psd file if it used that many times.
