Illustrator 23 Pen Tool not functioning on a M1 Mac

I just updated to Illustrator 23/v27 on my Mac (M1 MacBook 64GB macOS 12.6 with a Wacom Intuos Pro PTH-660). The pen tool won't select points to delete and it won't add points to an existing path. When hovering over a path or point, the pen cursor never changes from an asterisk to a plus or a minus. I don't know if the conflict is with the M1 Mac, the Wacom tablet or both, but this wasn't a problem in the previous version of Illustrator, so I've rolled back to v26.5.

In Preferences > General is "Automatic Add/Delete" turned on? If not, please turn it on.

Thanks that solved the problem. In Illustrator 23/v27, this preference is turned off by default...is that a change from previous versions? I don't recall needing to modify this preference in Illustrator 22/v26x when I installed CC on my new MacBook.
