Illustrator 23 - the control handles used to manipulate a curve disappear

I draw a cruve line using the pen tool. I use the direct selection tool to select an anchor point. The control handles show up when the anchor point is selected. When I try to select the control handle to maniplate the shape the handle dissapears so I can not change the shape of the line.
