Illustrator 24.0.3 Quits when I close file and saving a file is slow on macOS Catalina

Ever since the Apple Catalina 10.15.2 OS upgrade, I've had some strange software behavior I thought I'd share to see if anyone else is experiencing, or may have answers.

Compared to previous Illustrator versions, it takes a long time to simply Save a file in progress. Command > Save, takes 4-5 seconds, or File > Save as, takes as long or longer. And, these are not large KB files. It used to be almost instantaneous—and I have a MacPro with a lot of RAM.

The other issue is, when I close a file, Command > W, more than half the time the program quits. It doesn't crash, like some others have been claiming. It just Quits—gives me the "Would you like to keep your clipboard" dialog box. And yes, I know the "W" and "Q" keys are right next to each other, but trust me I am hitting the "W" key. I have to start up Illustrator often. Anybody else? Any answers as to why?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  1. Does the application quits while saving the file in a particular format?
  2. Where do you save the file, locally or on any network or shared drive?
  3. Is the application slow while saving the file in any particular format or in any format?
  4. Could you please try turning off the GPU performance(Just for testing) and see if that makes the difference in performance.
  5. You can also try booting the system into Safe Mode (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/x-productkb/global/start-safe-boot-mode-mac.html) and check how it works there.

Getting back to your questions:

1. No. Only quits when closing the file.

2. Locally

3. Not sure, but seems slower overall compared to previous versions

I will try the other suggestions, thank you.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out and highlighting this. Currently we are investigating this issue. Till the time is fixed, go to Preferences (CMD+K) > File Handling & Clipboard and uncheck "Save in Background" and let us know how it goes.

I would also suggest if you can upvote this issue here (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-bugs/suggestions/39278980-automatic-quitting-when-clicking-the-red-close-but) and share your feedback in the comments. This is the best way of communicating with the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.
