Illustrator 26.2.1 on M1 Mac slows to crawl in outline view

Version 26.2.1 does not work as intended for me. M1 Macbook Pro 32gb ram and slowing to a crawl when viewing one shape with outline. Why has this same issue been coming back for over a year in seemingly every new release?

[Subject renamed for clarity. Was "Illustrator 25.3.1 update - GPU performance greyed out after using outline mode."]

Running an M1 Mac on version 26.2.1, this is still happening. This computer is days old with no extraneous extensions installed. Similar to consistent stalling on Intel macs when viewing outlines (just opening a simple 24px glyph that's less than 1kb, pressed command-y), and Illustrator starts hogging up to 18Gb of RAM. Unfortunately, older Illustrator versions are quite slow on this machine through Rosetta. So Illustrator is now unusable for me.

Hi @somegoodpixels,

Sorry to hear about your experience. It seems the issue you are facing is different than the one discussed in this post. I would request you to share a few details so we can have a better understanding of the issue you are facing:

  • The exact version of macOS
  • Is the GPU performance disabled or greyed after switching to outline mode, or are you facing extensive lags while working in outline mode?
  • Is this happening while working on a specific file or all?
  • Please share a small recording of the issue, including the GPU settings in Illustrator preferences. It would be really helpful for us.

We are here to help. We just need more info.

Thanks & Regards,
