Illustrator 27.0 Auto-Flipping to CPU

I udpdated to the latest version of Illustrator for 2023 (27.0) and noticed almost immediately that my workspaces were "auto-flipping" to CPU when I work in GPU daily.

When I first open the file everything looks good and my scrubby zoom works fine.  After a few minutes, even when I am not touching anything at all, my workspace will 'flicker' or 'blink' (as I've been calling it), and then my scrubby zoom no longer works.  When I nagivate to View to select 'Preview on GPU' the action/option is then completely grayed out after this flicker happens.  I'm forced to close my file and re-open, but the same thing happens after a few moments yet again.  Not being able to use scrubby zoom makes my daily job a literal nightmare.

In tandem with the Illustrator update, I updated graphics drivers and have rebooted my computer twice since all updates.  I ended up reverting to the previous AI version, which isn't the worst thing ever because I get the Rings of Power art back for the start-up screen, but I know I cannot work in an old version forever.  Wanted to post to call this out as an issue in the event it is happening for anyone else.

Many thanks!

How Adobe can charge so much EVERY YEAR for something as glitchy as this is a scandal. Too many issues.

My friend you are not alone. I use Illustrator daily and as soon as I updated to version 27, files that I was working on just hours before on a previous version all of a sudden now switch to CPU preview moments after opening the file. The same file in the previous version does not have this problem. I as well updated windows, updated GPU drivers, latest version of creative clouds, nothing fixes the problem. Can I assume that you are also working in CYMK mode? I've found that this problem does not occur in RGB. I've found that working with RGB files in CMYK mode may cause this problem. I've tried to recreate entire files from scratch step by step to see where the problems happen and on my side, it's while working in CMYK mode.

Ignore the response below about updating your preferences, it wont work and it's clearly a bug.

Hello @MegaTorque-01,

Sorry to hear about this experience. Would you mind sharing some more details, like the exact version of the OS installed, the CPU/GPU(s), and the monitor you are using?

Also, if your computer has more than 1 GPU, kindly try the steps shared in this help article (https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-110) to select your dedicated GPU for Illustrator and check if it helps.

Additionally, try the steps shared in this help article (https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/257703), restart your computer, and share your observations.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Anubhav

I am currently using Windows 10 22H2 (10.0.19045.2130) (October 18, 2022)

Intel i7-7700K CPU

GPU: Geforce 1080Ti

The multiple GPU situation does not apply to me in this case, and resetting the WMI does nothing useful unfortunately.

I am willing to send over my working file and a screen recording which can help show the bug. In this video you can see it's already stuck in CPU mode. If I revert or open the file again, it starts with GPU enabled but after a few seconds of doing anything, even just scrolling, it switches to CPU and then GPU is greyed out.

Hello @theroundkicklolita,

Sorry to hear about this experience. Would you mind trying to reset Illustrator's preferences by following the steps shared in this article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-preference-issues.html) and sharing your observations?
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with the defaults. You may take a backup of these settings from the location mentioned in the article.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Anubhav
