Question

Illustrator 30.6 taking 30+ minutes to save files, or not saving at all

Since updating Adobe Illustrator to version 30.6 two days ago, I’ve been experiencing serious issues when saving documents.

Files are taking more than 30 minutes to save and in some cases Illustrator appears to hang indefinitely without completing the save. A lot of work has been lost as a result.

My setup:

  • Mac Studio: Apple M1 Max
  • macOS Sonoma
  • Illustrator 30.6
  • Files are being saved to an external hard drive but I have also tested saving locally with no luck

I wasn’t experiencing this issue before updating to version 30.6 and macOS Sonoma appears to be listed as compatible with Illustrator 30.6.

Has anyone else encountered this since installing version 30.6?

@ATOF can you try if it saves faster when in Preferences > File Handling the Save in Background option is turned off?

    Hi @ATOF,

Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry you're experiencing this issue. I understand how frustrating it is when Illustrator takes an unusually long time to save or hangs during the process.

In addition to the suggestions already shared, could you please try testing in a new macOS user account (https://adobe.ly/3RzkIL1) and in Safe Mode (https://adobe.ly/44LDIJk) to help isolate the cause? If possible, also update to the latest macOS Tahoe and check if the behavior improves. Lastly, please reset Illustrator preferences by following this guide: https://adobe.ly/44LDJgm, and let us know the outcome.

    Looking forward to update.

Thanks both, just finished updating to Tahoe 26.5.2, no improvement so far. Will try the rest of the suggestions now and keep you posted. Fingers crossed!
