illustrator background showing white instead of transparent

I have used illustrator and photoshop for decades without difficulty. I just updated to illustrator 25.5.1  and photoshop  26.6.1 and am now rather frustrated; I modify an image in photoshop, save it with a transparent background (I have tried saving as every type of file), but no matter what I do, the image still opens in illustrator with a white background instead of transparent. This also occurs when I open imagges that were cfreated and saved in prior photoshop versions (and that I have opened in prior illustrator versions without difficulty). I have tried everything I can think of and everything I have read, including uninstalling and re-installing both programs. Nothing has worked and I am unable to do my work. Does anyone have a solution? Adobe?
