Illustrator Big Intrusive Grid?

I don't have time to research this because I'm on deadline—any help would be appreciated. Why do new files I try to make in Illustrator have what looks like a gunsight pattern over a greyed-out checkerboard? Why would anyone even want that? Anybody know how to stop this?

What @Monika Gause already said.

To change an already existing document with video preset into "normal" RGB-Document try the following "three" steps

At first your document looks like this:

---------------------------------------------------

Step 1

uncheck the video ruler

Step 2

uncheck transparency grid

Step 3

uncheck all green guides (two ways possible)

to

---------------------------------------------------

Done:

Or another simple way:
Copy and paste the content into a new document (e.g. with RGB preset).

If that works for you
have fun

Enable the artboard tool, turn off safe areas and all that or simply hide it from the view menu.
