Illustrator CC 2017 freezes on Windows 10

Hi, I have a big problem with Illustrator. Sometimes it works just fine for the whole day. Then sometimes I just try to open a file and Illustrator just freezes up. Have to tear it down with the task manager, without opportunity to save my work. This is quite irritating in a professional work environment.

The freeze-up usually occurs when I try to open an ai- or svg-file from my regular explorer window. It does not seem to matter if Illustrator is already running or if it is starting up when doubleclicking the file to be opened. In both cases AI will come up but it's like a ghost program that won't respond to anything I try. When I select close window from the taskbar, AI tries to display an error message, but that's just a broken and empty white square.

I have never messed with the preference files. This is a clean CC install on a brandnew Lenovo Thinkpad running WIndows 10.

InDesign and Photoshop are working rock solid, Experience Design CC has the occasional crash but I guess that's because it's still in beta. I mean... c'mon, Illustrator has been around for half of eternity, how come it's running so crappy on windows 10?

Any suggestions apart from the "preferences reset" would be appreciated. The instructions for setting other preferences (How to set preferences in Illustrator ) are cryptic and i fail to understand them.

Hi kathryns,

As per your query when you open the file directly from windows explorer it freezes, I that correct?

or it freezes when you have one file open in Illustrator and you try to open the second file from explorer?

or it freezes generally, even while working on it.

In addition to this, I would also request you to share some more details like:

Operating System (Exact Version of Windows or MAC)

Where are the files saved? If they are saved in some shared folder or network location please save them on the desktop and check how it works.

Also, try to restore preferences to default ( How to set preferences in Illustrator  ) and share results.

Hi Alexander,

In addition to the above-mentioned suggestion, I would advise you to check your temp files by initiating the "Run" command by pressing "Windows Key + R" and type in %temp% and hit enter. If there are too many temp files please delete them. You can also try reinstalling the application.

You can also try disabling the GPU performance in Illustrator preferences. Here's a link for more details: GPU Performance.

Hi Twarita,

thanks for your help and reply. I deleted the temp files and activated the GPU boost. Will wait and see if freezes in AI still occur. So far it's been running fine today.

  1. Check you recently installed apps and remove anything that does not belong, if not sure google
  2. flush the cookies in your web browser
