Question

Illustrator CC - How to work with patterns

(Already sorry for my English - it is not my mother language)

Hi everybody!

So recently we got a Problem in our Company and we dont know how to fix it. Maybe one of you can help?

The issue is, we got a file with a pattern in it. The pattern is a File with, I think, 9 different designs, and it repeats itself within the obejct.

The customer wants the pattern to stay as it is - so if you move the object around the pattern within changes also. But we already fixed this Problem in the Default Settings. Within the File itself there is no Problem anymore.

But - if we wanna copy and paste the entire Illustration into a new File, the issue happens. The pattern changes again, even tough we "fixed" it in the original document.

How is it possible to copy/paste it without everything changing again?

I cant attach any Pictures because we are not allowed too - hope you understand.

Thanks for your help,

best regards

Sabrina

It is getting interesting (and more confusing).

I tried it again, paste into a new different sized document with the "Transform Both" option checked in the Transform panel menu.

And the pattern shifted.

I remembered that I had turned on another option related to Paste in the Layers panel: "Paste remembers Layers".

I turned it off and the pattern stayed in place inside the object.

Don't ask me why, but it seems that these 2 options are influencing the position of the pattern when pasting in another different sized document.

Turn On: Transform Both in the Transform Panel

Turn Off: Paste Remembers Layers in the Layers panel

Somehow ist weird that those two Options seem to go against each other - wouldnt it make more sense if they work together?

We tried it and this Option would work as well! Thanks so much for your help!

If this is a final file, start by saving it with a different name to play it safe.

If you never want the Pattern to move, select the object containing the Pattern and under the Object menu, select Expand and press OK. It is no longer a Pattern, it's now just objects within a Mask. So unlike Patterns, you can copy and paste or move this object and the "pattern" will not move.

Hope this helps!

This actually helped a lot! My Co-Worker seemed to be pretty happy about this Option! Thanks so much for pointing that out - I think this will be our solution

Do you see a shift when you check (before pasting) in the receving document "Transform Both" in the fly-out menu of the Transform Panel?

Try and set the rulers to Artboard rulers and then Paste in Place..

If that doesn't work, you could either expand the pattern or place the complete file containing the artwork into the other file.

Our rulers are always set to Artboard so this doesnt really make the difference!

Sadly this doesnt work for us but thanks for trying to help!
