Illustrator crashes if I make a grid and try to do wireframe mode

I need to create a lot of icons using my clients graphic standards and grid. However, when I create a grid and then try to see my artwork in wireframe mode it sits and spins (Adobe Illustrator not responding) so I have to force quit illustrator. I tried resetting prefs. I tried deleting Adobe Illustrator and re-installing. Nothing seems to help. These are very simple one color line work icons. 

 

Im at a loss and Im not going to meet my deadline.

Any help would be appreciated.

 

Illustrator 25.3.1

 

MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019

2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

64 GB 2667 Mhz DDR4

AMD Radeon Pro 5500m 8GB

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

It does not crash, but it is very slow to switch to Outline mode.

Hide the grid before switching and it is fast.

But it should not behave that way, opening an .ai version of the file in 2020 or CC behaves like it should, instant switching to Outline mode.

For me, it never switches to outline mode. I get the beach ball and I can wait for 5 minutes and it still wont go to outline mode. I will report it. In the meantime, I am just not using the grid, so im just kinda winging it. Ill fix them later once i get this fixed.

Can you share a sample Illustrator file including some instructions about what you are trying to do?

Attached AI file, I just want to be able to hit comman-Y to see this in wireframe mode. If I do that on this (or any other illustration with a grid) it sits and spins until I have to force quit Illustrator. I tried creating entirely new documents and it still happens so it is not an issue with this particular file.
