Illustrator Crashes Multiple Times a Day + Language Keeps Switching to Swedish After Updates

Hello,

I’m based in Sweden and prefer to run my Adobe apps in English (much easier to follow tutorials and guides), but I want the rest of my system – Windows, Office, etc. – to remain in Swedish.

In Creative Cloud, I’ve set my app language to English. However, after each update, my apps revert to Swedish and all settings are lost, including my “Recent files” list, even when I’ve exported my preferences.

Support previously assured me this would work without changing my Windows display language, but the only way I’ve found to keep Adobe apps in English with settings intact is to switch Windows entirely to English — which I don’t want to do.

Illustrator problem: On top of the language issue, Illustrator crashes multiple times a day, even when working with small or simple files. This is happening regardless of whether GPU acceleration is enabled or disabled.

Troubleshooting already tried:

  • Set Creative Cloud language preference to English (several times)

  • Reinstalled Illustrator and Photoshop in English

  • Exported and re-imported preferences after updates

  • Contacted Adobe support (no working solution)

  • Tested switching Windows to English → works, but not acceptable for my whole system

  • Reset Creative Cloud cache and preferences

  • Updated GPU drivers and tried both with GPU acceleration on/off in Illustrator

  • Disabled all third-party plugins

Questions:

  1. Has anyone successfully kept Illustrator (and other Adobe apps) in English on a Swedish Windows system without changing the entire OS language?

  2. Has anyone resolved frequent Illustrator crashes on Windows 10/11 when working with relatively light files?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi @kerstinlofgren,

For the language reverting issue, please open the Creative Cloud desktop app, go to Preferences, select Apps, set the default install language to English, and then reinstall Illustrator. This usually helps keep the language locked without changing your Windows display language.

For the crash problem, please submit the crash report through the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog and share the email address you used via DM so I can check the logs. Ref: https://adobe.ly/3UZFcuj. Also, try the steps in this guide: https://adobe.ly/45lJgLK.

It would also help to run Illustrator in Safe Mode to see if the crashes stop, as this can point to a settings or extension conflict. If possible, test the app in a new Windows user account and let me know if it behaves the same.

Looking forward to your update.

Thank you for your reply.

Regarding the language reverting issue:
I’ve already set the default install language in Creative Cloud to English and reinstalled Illustrator (and other Adobe apps) multiple times. Unfortunately, after any update, the apps still revert to Swedish and all my settings, including “Recent files,” are lost — unless my Windows display language is set to English. This behavior has been consistent across several updates, so it’s not resolved by the standard reinstall method.

Could you please confirm if this is a known bug or documented issue in Adobe’s internal database? If so, is there a timeline for a fix or an official workaround that doesn’t require changing the entire Windows system language?

Regarding the crash issue:
I’ve submitted multiple crash reports through the Adobe Crash Reporter, but I can share the email used via DM if needed. Illustrator continues to crash several times a day, even with small files and regardless of whether GPU acceleration is enabled or disabled. I’ve already:

  • Followed the steps in the linked crash guide

  • Disabled all third-party plugins

  • Reset preferences

  • Tested with GPU acceleration on/off

  • Updated GPU drivers

I have not yet tried a completely new Windows user account, but I can do that as a next step if needed. However, since the crashing also happens on a clean install without plugins, I suspect it’s not a profile issue.

Please let me know if the language issue can be escalated and whether there is an internal acknowledgment of this problem.

/Kerstin

Hello @kerstinlofgren,

Thanks for sharing the details. Could you please send me or Abhishek the Email ID used for submitting the crash report via DM so we can investigate this with the product team?

For help with the language switching issue, could you try the following steps and share your observations:
> Set up a different administrator account (Windows / macOS)
> Open Creative Cloud, sign in, and set the Default Install Language (https://adobe.ly/3HATY7S.)
> Uninstall the currently installed version of Illustrator
> When re-installing Illustrator, choose to install an earlier version by clicking on the 3 dots.
> Launch Illustrator to confirm if it opens in the correct language
> Update Illustrator using the Creative Cloud Desktop application
> Relaunch Illustrator to confirm if the language setting sticks

Looking forward to hearing from you.
