Illustrator crashes when I select the black swatch

When I use the small black swatch bottom left on the colour palette I frequently get a sudden crash of Illustrator that usually requires a force restart of my Imac/ I am running Illustrator 24.3 (2020) Which is the highest Illustrator I can now run with my OS. High Sierra.
