Question

Illustrator crashes when updating modified links or opening PDFs (macOS)

I’m encountering a consistent and blocking crash issue with Illustrator that appears to be related to link/PDF parsing. This issue is reproducible across versions and does not involve cloud or synced files.

Environment

  • macOS (Apple Silicon)

  • Illustrator 2025 and 2026 (both tested, same behavior)

  • .ai file stored locally

  • All linked images are stored locally in a nearby folder (same directory level, no cloud syncing)

Issue description

  • A local .ai file that opened and saved normally a few days ago now crashes Illustrator on open.

  • On opening, Illustrator prompts: “Update modified links”, even though:

    • The linked images were not edited

    • The file paths have not changed

    • All links are local and accessible

  • Selecting Replace or Ignore both result in an immediate crash.

  • The crash occurs consistently at the same stage.

Additional findings

  • Placing the damaged .ai into a new blank Illustrator document partially works:

    • Some artwork is placed successfully

    • This suggests the document content still exists, but the file structure is corrupted

  • Renaming the file from .ai to .pdf:

    • Opens correctly in Acrobat (all pages visible and intact)

    • Crashes Illustrator immediately on open

Why this appears to be a bug

  • Reproducible across Illustrator versions (2025 and 2026)

  • Occurs with fully local files and local links

  • Independent of user choice (Replace vs Ignore)

  • Acrobat can render the document correctly

  • Illustrator crashes specifically during link or PDF parsing

Impact

This makes Illustrator unreliable for production files that:

  • Use locally stored linked images

  • Depend on Illustrator’s AI/PDF dual structure

  • Are reopened after a short time gap without content changes

Once a file enters this state, there appears to be no recovery path inside Illustrator.

I would appreciate:

  • Confirmation whether this is a known issue

  • Any official explanation of the cause

  • Guidance on preventing this type of file failure in future versions

Thank you.

I would purposely move the images into a folder to break the link. Try opening the .ai file. If it opens, you know that one of the linked files has a tech issue.

Once you find what file is causing htat send us some more detials and we can help. It migth be a nested symbol, bad font, too many overlapping point. A screenshot would be helpful to narrow down the possibilities

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve already tested breaking the links by intentionally moving the linked images to another folder.

Unfortunately, Illustrator still crashes immediately at the “Update Modified Links” stage, regardless of whether I choose Replace or Ignore. The document never reaches an editable state.

Because the crash happens before the file is opened, I’m unable to isolate individual linked files from within Illustrator. This suggests the issue is not a specific linked file itself, but rather a failure during link parsing / link state resolutionwhen the document is being opened.

Since:

  • All links are stored locally

  • The crash occurs even when links are missing

  • User choice (Replace vs Ignore) makes no difference

It appears to be a parsing-stage issue rather than a content-level issue that can be troubleshot inside the document.

Hello @Rei Camus,

Thanks for sharing your insights. Could you confirm if this happens with a specific file? If yes, kindly share a link to the file after uploading it to a file-sharing service, so we can check it with the team.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

@Rei Camus when you are using damaged files, they will likely crash your app. Is it a bug? Too me, no it isn't. You might be lucky that part of the file works, but that's just a part of it...hence why 'Illustrator crashes specifically during link or PDF parsing'
