Illustrator CS5.1 - CRASHES ON SAVE!!!!!!!!!!!

I am absolutely sick to death of this error within illustrator.

When I go to save a project, unless I save it to the directory which it defaults to, usually the folder or area that I have initially imported my scan or sketch to, say the 'Download Folder', it will crash instantly EVERY SINGLE TIME AND I DETEST IT!! How can such a basic function of a fundamental program cause such an error??

I have add previous work completely lost as it has previously picked a folder were files are only temporarily stored, so when I saved it there it was then deleted afterwards.

Someone save me from smashing my computer into pieces please.

Any help, greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

As Monika said, because it is an old version, you may have no choice.

However, you could try resetting preferences

Realise this is really old but did you find a fix for this?

The solution to the question is marked in green at the top of the thread.

In case you are running that version on an officially compatible (i.e. old) system, then the solution could be to check user privileges and rebuild preferences, because usually Illustrator crashes on save when the preferences file can not be written.

was just asking incase that hadn't worked for them.  I found that I can now save without it crashing just by expanding the save as drop down and choosing my folders that way instead of clicking on the folder directly underneath.

On what OS and What machine are you running this old software.

If you updated your OS and you can not update the software, than maybe rolback your OS.

Sounds like you are using this old version on a new system, right?

In that case your only chance is to actually save to the default location.

Please see the compatible systemversions here: Older versions of Adobe Illustrator system requirements
