Question

Illustrator CS5 moving multiple points at once to alter shapes

So what I want to do is collapse all the selected points in this polygon toward the center (not all the way into the center just part way) thus proportionally reducing the area of the interior shape (an image of it is below) and adjusting the lines does anyone know a way to do that? Holding CMD (I am on a Mac) and scaling just scales the whole thing even when I have only the points I want to move selected with the direct selection tool. Thanks for your time!

And now that we have the crucial feature in place, here is the Move-Multiple-Points PNG:

    Peter,

I am still convinced that what looks right is right, and that there are (almost) always more than one way to do things.

And since we have seen no sketch from Griffin, there can always be different interpreetations.

    Most intriguing, Peter.

And quite different from what I get when using the 80% Scale.

Unfortunately, the HTML editor is absent, so here is a link:

Jacob, your results are, of course, correct. I drew a hexagon, rotated 15°/duplicated 3 times, then ran Pathfinder Divide before selecting and scaling the inner points, which was making unwarranted assumptions. I like the results, they're just not right.

With those points selected choose the Scale Tool and shift-drag inward as far as you want to go. You may find that before you reach the desired location the paths may flip across each other, in which case back up until things look correct again, release the mouse button, and repeat as necessary until you reach the desired diameter.

    Griffin,

Have you tried the simple one step uniform scale way of moving all points at once at full accuracy suggested in the 4th post?

if i want to do this i would draw a circle in the center ( just to be as a giude), and i will move the points in direct slection tool manual. dont forget to active snap to object.

    Griffin,

How about just Object>Transform>Scale with a Uniform Scale value (80% or whichever value suits you)?

Ctrl/Cmd+Z and Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z are your friends.

Not sure what shape that actually is AND not sure what exactly you want to do. Can you perhaps elaborate and show a sketch or something and maybe color the shapes differently in case there are multiple?
