Illustrator CS6 hangs opening existing files

I have been having a problem with Illustrator CS6: Whenever I try to open up an existing file, Illustrator hangs. If I leave it long enough it will open the file. Any click causes a 30 second (at least) delay. I can work in it as long as I'm patient enough to only click once.

System:

OS: Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 - 64bit

Proc: Intel Core i5 CPU M520 @ 2.40 GHz

RAM: 6GB

User is on a domain

Illustrator CS6 64bit has latest update: 16.0.2

Creative Suite Design & Web Premium is installed. No other applications have this problem.

Problem has been occuring for two weeks straight.

Still incurring problem after doing the following:

1) Uninstall full suite and delete preferences; reinstall

2) Uninstall full suite, use cleaner tool, reinstall

3) Install/run FontExplorerX due to missing font

4) Make sure all applications are up-to-date

5) Run Illustrator as administrator and in administrator account (files still did not open properly)

6) Disable smart guides, and select no thumbnail in the layers palatte

Please let me know if you have any suggestions!

Hey everyone,

I just created an account with Adobe to jump into this discussion.

SUCCESS:

I have had success with a computer accessing ilustrator files over a network (QNAP RAID10 storage device).

I am able to open, move linked items, edit linked items, etc. without a problem.  ALL on a Network drive.

RECENT ISSUE / SUCCESS:

This forum was helpful.

I have another computer recently connected to the same network.

Whenever working in illustrator, the program would hang, delay and continue.  on a frequent basis.  Not responding and then responding.

This would happen only when opening illustrator files on the network or files on the desktop that have files placed in themt that are located on the server.

Anyways,

I went to preferences in Illustrator > Scratch Disks and set both to C:/

And it seems like the 'hanging' DISAPPEARED  for now anyways.....

I know this might not help.  But just wanted to confirm that (for now) I have 2 computers accessing and modifying illustrator files on server without issues.

Just wanted to bring some hope here.

Did anyone ever get an answer to this?

We are seeing very similar issues i.e. users have been upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 64 bit and now anytime they open files (that they created using the XP platform) the programs hangs and stops responding. I am guessing that the issue is somehow tied to the workstation that the user is using as I installed the software onto my laptop (which is Win7 x64) and tried to open one of the files and it worked fine.

Again, on the machine that we are seeing the problem on if I create a new file in CS6 it works fines, just seems to be with the existing files. The files do link to pictures that are located on network shares and although I havent moved them locally to the machine I have moved the file locally and doesnt make any difference.

Tried what user suggested with the scratch disks but also didnt make any difference.

We have an Adobe case open but all they have suggested we do is uninstall and reinstall which I have now done twice.

Since I posted the previous I am found something interesting.

If I open the file that I have copied locally and remove the pictures that it links to the file then opens ok.

We have a policy on the network that re-directs the users My Documents to a network share and all the users files and pictures that they reference are stored in My Documents. So although it would see that the files and documents are local they arw actually on the network.

I have seen various posts on forums about CS6 not being able to handle files that exist on the network - is this really the case or is there a fix?

I will update the Adobe case with this info and see what they say.

Had same problem here recently with Illustrator CC (seems to be files with linked images it affects - I save ALL my work on the network shares, NEVER locally. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit).

My workaround is this:

  1. Open file
  2. Illy hangs
  3. Attempt to close the application (by clicking X in top right corner)
  4. Suddenly the file opens! (Illy does not close)

Weird, but it seems to work when i do this

The files which you are trying to open are they saved on Network/ Server ?

What if you create the new file, do you face the same issue ?

When you disconnect the computer from network and then try to work, does Illustartor works fine or give similar issue ?

Yes the files are saved on a Network/Server. I have an 18down/3up internet speed. Working with the same connections for over a year with no problems.

I don't have the same issue when I create a new file.

I also don't have the same issue with new files on my c: drive. But I do have the problem when I move the existing files from the server to my c: drive and try to open from my c: drive.

Is the server in the same format as your hard drive? Does your server have any adult privileges set to it? If it seems to only be an issue with files that the server touches I would look into that first. I had some issues with a network server that was accessed by mac and pc computers. Every once in a while the Mac users suddenly couldn't open any of the AI files off of the server due to privilages. Even if we manually changed them from that mac it wouldn't work. We had to make the changes on the server side.

Also have you tried opening it on another system? Is this a very complex file, do you see much ram usage or page filing after opening the file?

Do you open them and work on them directly from the server or do you transfer them to your C: drive work on them and then transfer them back after saving? I know there are issues working directly from external drives if there are any connection issues.
