Illustrator does not use data on embed

When linking to an AI file, then embedding: why can't illustrator embed the original AI data, with the original grouping and layer order? It is its own file type after all.

@DanielShealey I totally agree, embedding should use the Illustrator content instead of the PDF part.

I really wish that when linking to an Illustrator file, it would use the illustrator file information. When embedding a link after revisions of the original file, I’d like to also carry over the actual illustrator information along with grouping and layer organization. We could still use the pdf data for preview so its snappier but on embed, go grab the original information. Seems kind of silly that a program cannot properly import its own data type effectively.

I wouldn’t think it would since one is embedding it--to me, that implies a single object.

I assume you are familiar with the Paste Remembers Layers option in the Layers panel?
