Question

Illustrator for Mac does not remember New window size and position and Ruler visible

Well, this morning when I make a new file, Illustrator opens the window full screen and without the ruler visible.  Illustrator used to remember the last New window state. I am now having to resize it, set the zoom, and show the ruler EVERY TIME I make a new file. Please fix!!

Hi @Herbie22012266fjw7,

Thanks for sharing this. Could you confirm which version of Illustrator and macOS you’re using? In the meantime, please try resetting Illustrator preferences after backing them up and let me know if that makes a difference. It would also help if you could share a couple of screenshots to show the difference in the window behavior. Additionally, try creating a new document profile and check if the ruler visibility and window size are remembered when you start from that profile. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Best,
Abhishek

Hi, Abhishek. Thank you for your reply. I am running the most current version, 29.7.1 on Mac Sequioa 15.6.1. Resetting the preferences did not affect how a new file opens--they all open full screen no matter how I resize and then close one.

I thought the Document Profile you mentioned might be a usable work around--as you have to select a profile from the drop-down in the open dialog box--but it still opens full screen and not at the window size and postion it was when I defined that document profile or last closed a new file. I am pretty sure that AI used to remember what size and postion to open a new docuemnt as, until now.

BTW, InDesign has had this horrible behviour for a number of versions now, but I recently found a script and modified it to force new (and exisiting)  files to open at my desired window size and postion. Sometimes I have to run the script manually, but most of the time it works. I might have to find a similar solution for Illustrator, now. Sigh.

Hi @Herbie22012266fjw7,

Thanks so much for sharing the screenshots and the details. I understand how frustrating it can be to adjust the window size, zoom, and ruler visibility every time you create a new document, especially when Illustrator previously remembered these settings.

For now, could you try saving your current workspace under Window > Workspace > New Workspace after setting your panels, rulers, and zoom level, then restarting Illustrator to see if it helps Illustrator retain those preferences? Please let me know if saving the workspace makes any difference on your end.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek
