Illustrator - How do I maintain selection of a shape (retain anchor points) after finishing it.

In Illustrator, I used to be able to quickly edit a shape after I drew it, because it remained editable (anchor points stayed active). Now, the shape is de-selected once I finish drawing it, so I have to go back and select the shape again to activate editable anchor points. Is there a way I can make the shape stay selected so I can edit it?

If you are using the brush or pencil tool for drawing, then double click that tool and turn on the option "Keep selected"
