ILLUSTRATOR: How to stop using "text"

In photoshop when you're done typing a sentence you can hit the "enter" button and it deselects the text, so you can then simply hit a keyboard short cut for any tool you want. But in illustrator is acts like the "return" key and starts a new line underneath.

The way I've been getting away from the text line once Im done typing is just "command" clicking somewhere away from the text line. I feel like im missing something, is this really the only way the creators of this software expect you to get out of the type tool? Is there a better way? And yes I know I can also drag my mouse to the tool bar and select a new tool manually, but I would love to know if theres an easier way.
