Illustrator - I've reset tool preferences and now all my work is gone

My spacebar was no longer working as a drag tool so I reset my tool preferences by holding shift, command and option when loading illustrator and now all of my recent files on illustrator are gone. Is there any way for me to retrieve these?

Alt + Command + Shift deletes them. They can only be restored via Time Machine or the Windows equivalent if you have it.

The files themselves still exist wherever you have saved them, but there is no way of retrieving the 'recent files' list in Illustrator without restoring the old preferences.
