Question

Illustrator is randomly duplicated my text elements and converting them to curves

Like the title says, This seems to be happening randomly, and frequently.

I will be working in my document, drawing new shapes, adjusting fills, etc. (design stuff)
And when I go to change a text element, it's been duplicated (in place, directly on top of the original text field) and converted to curves.

I have gone through the tedious process of manually deleting these duplicated layers hundreds of times. It just keeps happening.

I have restarted my macbook pro.

I have been saving as .aiMy adobe illustrator is up to date.

Hi! Have you managed to find a solution in the end? I have the same problem. Thank you!

I am facing the same issue. Any text I write and copy will then duplicate into a thousand times.

It randomly stops and randomly starts again.

Some shapes that I have created on a different design work will randomly appear on another work of mine. I have got final submissions soon and I am being slowed down on my laptop because of this issue.

I was using the 2024 then I updated it to 2025. It's like with the data I also transported the bug in the software.

A classmate told me to download the 2022 version (she had similar issues) but will all my design work be on the newer version? And yes I have deleted and downloaded the app again and restarted my laptop too.

My tutors are also unfamiliar with this issue.

If someone can pls help me out here. I cant afford a new laptop right now.

Try to run illustrator without any other apps or utilities.

If that does not help check if Illustrator runs normal in Safe Mode:

Are any Effects applied to the type elements?

Is there anything noteworthy to the regions where tis happens?

Could you post a screenshot with the expanded Layers Panel?

Please tell us your actual version of Illustrator, please don't just say it's up to date. Many problems actually turn out to be failures in updating.

Apologies, I forgot this might also be version specific. May actually be because I updated.

The text element has:

  • shear -24° vertical.
  • It has a solid fill
  • Opacity 100%
  • Blending mode normal

screenshot of the offending element attached.

This is what the hierarchy looks like:

I see nothing noteworthy. I've converted the PHONE to a symbol, but only recently - this has been happening for a while, and I hoped symbols wouldn't be affected by whatever this is.

I also just updated the astute plugins I am using (they weren't used during any of these particular sessions, hoping that resolves the issue - even though it's unlikely)

Is this an old file or a new file?

When ever you open an old file with a newer version, first thing should be: do a  "Save as" in order to update the version of the file.
