Illustrator Issues with Large files and program slowing down to barely a crawl

I've created a file that is about 1.5GB in size. You can see when it's open in Illustrator it's taking about 6.5GB of active memory in task manager.

When trying to work in this file the program moves to a crawl, including the drop-down menus. The rest of the system is fine.

System:

Ryzen 9 5950x

64GB 3200Mhz RAM

RTX 3080

Windows 10

I've lowered the document raster effects to screen (72pp) to see if this resolves the issue and it doesn't

I've unchecked GPU performance under preferences. The same issue occurs.

This is making it very difficult for me to get my work done, has anyone seen anything like this on windows 10? with a resolution?

What is making the file so large? Images? Embedded images, symbols?

I would assume this is due to the large number of images. I didn't create the file, just trying to troubleshoot why it's behaving so poorly.

You can check the number of images in the Links panel.
