Illustrator keeps crashing when using space bar to move around document

It's been running fine for a few hours and then suddenly will crash 4-5 times in ten minutes as I am in the middle of moving the document around using the space bar to grab and move. My images are not embedded and the documents are just text and image based - no 3D or vector graphics.

I am wondering if I need to upgrade my GPU or CPU in order to run smoothly, but wondered if anyone had suggestions before I spend the money on that.

My current system is:

Illustrator version 27.2

GPU: AMD Radeon RX Vega

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core Processor

Running Windows 10 Home version 21H2

I had to uninstall the Wacom tablet drivers from January 2023 and roll back to the one from November of 2022. You can get the drivers on this page:
https://www.wacom.com/en-us/support/product-support/drivers
Just be sure to scroll down and choose "Older Versions" underneath the "Download" button.

Hello @SarahLaskey,

We are sorry to hear about the crash. I hope the suggestions shared by Bobby, Monika and Bill helped resolve the problem. If not, kindly try reverting to an older version of the Wacom driver (6.3.46-2) and check if it helps. If not, kindly try the suggestions shared in this help article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/fix-crash-on-launch-issues.html) and share your observations. Also, kindly share the crash report by following the steps shared in this help article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/crash-next-steps.html). While submitting the report, kindly use the same email account used here in the community so we can locate it quickly.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Has this been happening since an upgrade to the program? If this is new behavior whether having recently upgraded or not then you might want to try resetting your Illustrator preferences. This will restore the program to its defaults and hopefully clear up the issue.

To do so on Windows:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

You don't happen to have a Wacom graphics tablet attached to the computer do you?

I do! Wacom Intuos Pro - does that have known issues with Illustrator?

There are indeed issues with Wacom. Their current driver is buggy. So you need to uninstall the driver and install the older one.

When did you last reboot the computer?

Did it ever work correctly?

I restart my computer every morning. I recently started working from home for a new job and I am using Illustrator more often. I used to only use InDesign and Photoshop/Lightroom the majority of the time and never had issues running those.
