Illustrator keeps freezing entire computer

Question

Illustrator will freeze if I am doing anything like saving, moving larger image etc.  Recently started to do this and only a hard restart will work.   No error messages or crash reports.  I have ran anti virus / CC Cleaner / updated everything.  I do have an older system but was working until a few days ago.  Nothing new installed etc.   Dell XPS / 32 GB / i7-4770 @ 3.4 / GeForce GTX 660 / 1TB SS + 256 GB SS / 64 bit / Windows Pro 10.   It is my main work computer so any help appreicated!

I'm guessing the computer system was made around 2013, correct? Do GPU accelerated features in Illustrator, such as animated zoom, work on that machine. I have an old Dell XPS notebook from 2011 that I retired from use a few years ago; I replaced it with an Alienware notebook. Despite upgrading things like the RAM and hard drive the old notebook just couldn't do a lot of things in Illustrator productively anymore.
