Question

Illustrator on Windows freezing and crashing while working on a file

I have and brand new computer with an Intel Core i7-10700T CPU @ 2.00GHz and 16.0 GB Installed RAM but today while using Illustrator to create a design, my computer started to freeze and crash multiple times and I am unable to finish my design. I haven't had any problems with Illustrator and my computer has been lightning fast up until today. I don't get what would cause this all of a sudden other than maybe the design I was creating got to complex for Illustrator or my computer, but if that's the case, I'm really up the creek if I can't spend a bundle on a new computer but still can't create the designs I want! What am I missing? Is there some setting that will fix this?

Hi there,

Sorry for the delayed response. I would like to know if the steps suggested above by @Monika Gause worked for you? If not, I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator/InDesign
  • Is the issue happening while working on a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are you saving the files (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.

Also, you may try the steps shared on this page (https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator/resolve-slow-performance-and-unexpected-behaviors-in-illustrator/td-p/11561981) step by step and let us know how it goes?

Kindly update the discussion if you still need assistance with it. We'd be happy to help.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Please tell us what's in your design: the functionality you used and the number of objects are relevant here.

Also: how large is the file?

Where is the file stored?

Is there enough space left on the disk?

I suppose you already had a couple of computer reboots. Did you also reset the Illustrator preferences? (this will nuke your settings)

Hello Monika,

The file is about 27 MB and it's on my desktop as an Ai file. I used hundreds of objects with gradients. There is 794GB of free space on my disk. My computer didn't crash, Illustrator crashed. I didn't reset any preferences.

Please reboot the computer. This will clean up RAM and anything that might have got stirred up by Illustrator.

If that doesn't help, try and reset the preferences. You can rename the preferences folder, becase you can revert that in case it doesn't help. https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html
