Illustrator only opens files from the "open" menu...

Normally, clicking on a smart object in Photoshop, or an AI/EPS/SVG file in windows explorer will open said file(s) in Illustrator. However as of about a week ago, Illustrator no longer follows this pattern. I must use the File->Open Menu, and then navigate to the file. Getting to smart objects is a nightmare [I end up just remaking them in Illustrator and then re-pasting into PS.

Any thoughts?

Thx!

Glad you got your smart objects working again. Disappointed that you had to go a longer route of reinstalling, but thank you for sharing your solution as this might help the next person that encounters this.

Your file associations must have gotten corrupted. Right click on any .ai file you have and change the opens with to be the versions of Illustrator you want this to. The interface is very similar to as on the mac, where you have to click the change all to make this permanent for all .ai file in the future.

If you need further help, please state exactly what OS version you are on as windows has a control panel to manage this.

Control Panel > Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations

Acrobat is the only program in the Adobe Suite I believe that has settings within the app for which editor you are to use, and possibly Dreamweaver.

Thanks Mike, but that's not the problem. I can open files from windows explorer just fine. They are set to use illustrator to open as default...the problem is they don't open.

Double clicking any icon will pop me over to illustrator, but nothing happens.
