Question

Illustrator opening issues on Mac

9/10 times I'm trying to open illustrator (either going through an .ai file, or just opening the app itself), I'm faced with a blank grey screen. I’ve deleted & re-installed the app, made sure it’s all updated and nothing seems to be helping. It seems to have happened since there’s been a new pop-up every time regarding accessing data from other apps, unsure if it’s related?

With it not happening every single time too (but the vast majority) I'm even more at a loss on what to do! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In order to rule out program-wide corruption try resetting your Illustrator preferences. This will restore the program to its defaults and, hopefully, fix the problem

    To reset preferences:

For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which Illustrator’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that Illustrator is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and the file called “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

For Windows Users: You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

    To do so:

On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create  new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Thanks you - this seemed to work temporarily (2 days maybe), however the problem has started again this morning upon starting work. I’m at a total loss - any ideas?!

    Hello @Louise38329955ls1o,

That does seem strange. Would you mind trying the following steps and checking if they help:

    - Close all Adobe applications.

    - Rename the UXP folder to UXP.old from the following location:

    (Windows) Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\UXP

(macOS) Navigate to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/UXP

    - Relaunch Illustrator

If the problem persists, please try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks Anubhav. However I'm still having the issue - it is opening fine upon restarting of the laptop, if I open the app & a file straight away it works, however if I open the app & wait to open a file or open & close one file & try to open another I'm facing the same issue.

    Hello @Louise38329955ls1o

I’m sorry to hear the suggestions did not help. We’ll need some more information to be able to help you with this scenario:

    For macOS computers:
    1) AISniffer file
    - Close all Adobe applications
    - Navigate to the Illustrator Preferences folder and copy the AiSniffer file to the desktop from this location: Users/YOUR USERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator #(version Number)Settings > AISniffer

    2) System Report
    - You can generate it from the Apple icon > About This Mac > System Report > Save to the desktop.

    For Windows computers:
    1. AiSniffer file:
    - Close all Adobe applications.
    - Navigate to the Illustrator Preferences folder and copy the AiSniffer file to the desktop from this location:
    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 28 Settings\en_US\x64\

    2. For the System Report, kindly follow these steps:
    - Please press Windows Key + the letter "R" on your keyboard to bring up the Run command window
    - Type "msinfo32" in the Open field and left-click OK
    - While viewing the Microsoft System Information summary, go to File, then choose Save (Please do not use Export)
    - Save your MSINFO32 report as "msinfo32.nfo" on your desktop to easily locate it after. It can take up to a minute to generate a report.

Kindly upload the files along with a brief screen recording of the problem to Google Drive/Dropbox/etc and share a public link here or via DM so that we can investigate this further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
