Question

Illustrator overriding as PDF - irritating issues (slight rant)

I've been getting into the habit of keeping all my large AI files with many layers on Creative Cloud. This has now backfired as i've needed to save mulitlpe PDF files to my desktop from this AIC file.

And guess what guys, it doesn't WORK!! This is a warning to anyone wanting to convert an AIC file to a PDF on your computer - don't do it as it will OVERRIDE your AIC file as a PDF whilst pretending to be a regular AIC file and you will potentially loose many hours of work.

This has happened twice in a week to me and i've only just worked out the problem. It does beg the question WHAT IS THE POINT OF CREATIVE CLOUD! It's confusing and very limiting.

I'm now in the process of having to migrate many of my files back to my desktop becasue i just can't trust or get on with CC.

Tips and other solutions welcome.

What's the exact workflow here?

1. You are working on an AIC file.

2. You save a PDF from it to your local storage

3. Your working file is now the PDF

4. You continue working, not realising you are no longer working in the AIC file?

This would be the same for non-cloud files. If you have an AI file open, and you save it as a PDF, you now have a PDF file open. The AI file still exists in the last-saved state, but is now a separate file.

This workflow may well be problematic, but it isn't specifically to do with cloud files.

Hey Doug

Thanks for responding. Yes i think you might be right. I've just been doing lots of tests just now and it must be me "Saving As" and not "Saving a Copy" When you open an AIC file it actually doesn't give you the option to "Save A Copy" at all which is where i got confused. Can you explain to me why we don't have this option in Cloud files? I'm finding it really difficult to understand how i'm suppose to benefit from the cloud files when there are so many limitations to opening files in this way. Thanks 🙂

I don't know why Save a Copy isn't an option for cloud files. It may be intentional or it may be an oversight. I'll see what I can find out.
