Illustrator Problem - Can't create clipping Mask

I have an premade design of a pair of swim shorts. I have been trying forever to put a simple white polka dot pattern on this design. I have attempted what seems like every way to create a clipping mask so that this pattern will go on the shorts. However this is not working. I have tried creating a compound path which is what you see in these images. But parts of the design go missing, and some parts appear white. How do I resolve this? All I want to do is change the colour of the shorts and create a good clipping mask.

Where do you want your polka dots to be? On the green?

Then just make a pattern from the polka dots, apply a second fill to the shape that already has the green fill and apply the dots pattern to it.

Hi,

I can do that, however the image is still distorted from creating the compound path. All I would like is the original design to remain totally intact, and then to put the polka dot pattern on it. But once the compound path has been created, so I can then create the clipping mask, the design gets completely distorted.

Why do you think you need a compound path? There is no hole, there is just one part that needs to have the polka dots in it.
